The Journey

The exact route always depends on conditions. Both passages cover the same extraordinary stretch of Queensland coastline and reef.

1–2

Mooloolaba & the Sunshine Coast

Mooloolaba Marina → Great Sandy Strait

After arriving and provisioning at Mooloolaba on Wednesday 12 August, we overnight at the marina before leaving early. We make our way up the Sunshine Coast, rounding Noosa Heads and Rainbow Beach before entering the Wide Bay Bar into the Great Sandy Strait.

3

Fraser Island

Great Sandy Strait

We motor through the Great Sandy Strait — a beautiful network of narrow channels offering sheltered cruising and abundant wildlife. Our destination is Fraser Island, where you'll have time ashore at Lake Mackenzie and the island's remarkable interior.

4

Bundaberg

Crossing Hervey Bay

Crossing Hervey Bay, we make landfall at the Port of Bundaberg for a BBQ and the chance to meet fascinating sailors from all around the world.

5–6

Lady Musgrave Island

Capricorn Bunker Group

One or two nights at Lady Musgrave Island (weather permitting) — called Australia's best "get-away-from-it-all" reef anchorage. A full day to swim, snorkel, and explore this stunning coral lagoon ashore.

7

Fitzroy Reef or North West Island

Great Barrier Reef

We sail to the outer reef — either Fitzroy Reef or North West Island, the second largest coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef. Excellent snorkelling, turtle nesting beaches (in season), and spectacular birdlife. A true wilderness anchorage.

8–9

Arrive Yeppoon

Rosslyn Bay Marina

We make our final passage back to the Capricorn Coast, arriving at Rosslyn Bay Marina at Yeppoon on the evening of 20 August. Dinner ashore, overnight on the yacht, and depart by 9:00 am on 21 August. A bus runs from the marina to Rockhampton for onward connections.

If conditions do not allow us to reach the outer reef, we have excellent alternatives along the coast — including Pancake Creek and the islands around Great Keppel.

1

Arrive Yeppoon

Keppel Bay Marina, Rosslyn Bay

After arriving and provisioning at Rosslyn Bay on Friday 16 October, we overnight at the marina — with the afternoon spent on preparations for an early departure the following morning.

2–3

Fitzroy Reef or North West Island

Great Barrier Reef

We depart at dawn on Saturday 17 October and head straight offshore to the outer reef — either Fitzroy Reef or North West Island. Excellent snorkelling, turtle nesting beaches (in season), and spectacular birdlife. A true wilderness anchorage.

4–5

Lady Musgrave Island

Capricorn Bunker Group

One or two nights at Lady Musgrave Island — Australia's best "get-away-from-it-all" reef anchorage. A full day to swim, snorkel, and explore this stunning coral lagoon ashore.
